Chinese retailers may have been disappointed to start 2018 with a Year-on-Year decline in traffic, but as is widely reported, retail remains a key driver of the super-power’s economic growth. Chinese New Year in February is expected to deliver its traditional boost to traffic andspending, so sentiment is good.

HongKong’s retailers enjoyed a fantastic +4.5% uplift in Year-on-Year retail traffic in January, reflecting continued sales buoyancy.

According to an ACCA survey, finance professionalsin Hong Kong are six times more optimistic about the city’s economic outlook in2018 compared to last year. This is thanks to economic growth in mainland China, a firm US economy, low interest rates and a government plan to ease tax burdens on companies.

Traffic figures in India were flat in January, but the outlook remains extremely bright with Statista forecasting 6.6% retail sales growth for 2018.

Traffic into UK stores slipped by -3.1% Year-on-Year in January, with shoppers choosing to avoid freezing and wet weather conditions. Official UK retail sales figures show an increase of 0.6% on a like-for-like basis from January 2017, when they had decreased 0.6% from the preceding year.

While January is a slow traffic month in many European countries, French stores have the annual winter sales – les soldesd’hiver – as a footfall driver in fashion and homewares (as do retailers inItaly, Poland, Spain, Portugal). For 2018, Year-on-Year traffic growth in France was hard to achieve after a successful January 2017, so French retailers will be working hard to impress shoppers as the spring ranges arrive inFebruary.

After a strong performance over the festive season, Swiss retailers found their stores quieter in January, with Year-on-Year traffic down -6%.

Irish stores saw a slight dip in Year-on-Year traffic in January following December’s positive traffic growth story.

Retailers will benefit from Ireland’s upbeat growth forecast, recently upgraded by the European Commission. GDP is projected to grow 3.9% in 2018 – double the rate projected for Germany and three times the UK rate. Also, Irish seasonally adjusted unemployment declined to 6.1% in January 2018, compared with 7.4% a year earlier – the lowest jobless rate since May 2008.

After a hugely successful December of Christmas trading, Italy’s retailers experienced less traffic in stores in January, in line with seasonal expectations. The winter sales began from  5th January which could explain the busiest day being recorded as Sunday 14th when bargain-hunting reached a peak.

Portugal’s retail sector started the year in style with a healthy +6.4% Year-on-Year traffic uplift in January, following bumper Christmas trading.

The good news should continue, with analysts reporting that private consumption isin growth, investment in infrastructure and production is robust, and there’s ongoing recovery in the Portuguese labour market, supported by a stronger Eurozone.

Spanish stores achieved a +6.8% hike in Month-on-Month traffic for January, following impressive December growth. January’s uplift was mostlikely driven by impulse shopping when the winter sales went live. However, YoY traffic was flat.

Polish consumers famously flock to the shops for bargain-hunting in the January sales,and this was confirmed with the +5.4% Month-on-Month uplift recorded.
